SETUP ink cartridges are used only to set up a new HP printer or printhead and supply ink for the first series of your print jobs.

They are specially designed to initialize a printer and calibrate ink levels. Unlike replacement ink cartridges, SETUP ink cartridges cannot be purchased from retailers and are available only in the box with a new printer or with some replacement printhead kits. When a SETUP ink cartridge is depleted, purchase and use a normal ink cartridge that matches your printer model to continue printing.

Installing normal ink cartridges during the initial printer setup causes a printer error prompting you to install SETUP ink cartridges. Purchase and use ink cartridge numbers that match your printer model. Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers. After your printer has initialized, you can use the original SETUP ink cartridges until they are depleted and then replace them with normal ink cartridges for your printer.

You can purchase replacement ink cartridges from HP SureSupply or other retailers. Setup cartridges are only to be used the very first time in the printer upon installation and then until gone. After that, you never use a 'setup' cartridge again. Been that way since day one of printers. Older cartridges had 3 electrical contacts.

Newer cartridges have four. What gives? How about the concept of compatible parts I have a HP officejet and i need Setup Black, because dont get to configure the printer! I have the colors! How to BUy? From my understanding, across the entire lifecycle of the ink, the only change that has been made was that the XL Black at least here in Canada was made a little narrower. Please keep in mind that the Ca takes two different black cartridges. One is a bigger, wider one for text black.

It is the right-most cartridge and is represented by the pentagon. There is also a photo black, which is the same width as the color cartridges, and it goes on the left. I'm a happy user of the HP Photosmart all-in-one and for several years never had any trouble. I always purchased new cartridges and it worked fine. Recently a friend brought me from Singapore two new sets of cartridges but the shop owner said these are new higher capacity cartridges.
